December-
Winter wellness and a calm festive season
December arrives with a mix of sparkle, stress, reflection and fatigue. It is a month that asks a lot of our nervous system, especially if you are navigating perimenopause, amidst the shorter days or heavier emotional loads.
This is the time of year when our bodies quietly whisper for more warmth, more rest and more grounding. But the calendar often asks for the opposite. If you have been feeling stretched, tired or a little less anchored, you are not alone.
What I want you to know is this:
Your wellbeing does not depend on how much you get done this month, it depends on how supported you feel inside your body.
Hormonal shifts during perimenopause can heighten stress sensitivity, increase inflammation and affect mood regulation. Pair that with festive pressure, disrupted routines and colder weather, and it is no surprise that many women feel emotionally and physically depleted by mid-December.
This month, I invite you to soften your expectations and strengthen your nourishment. The nervous system thrives on warmth, steady blood sugar, magnesium rich foods, slow movement and moments of real rest. Small rituals go a long way.
Below is a calming recipe and some gentle winter practices to help you move through this month with more steadiness and less stress.
Winter Spiced Mood-Boost Stew
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 large sweet potato, cubed
- 1 cup lentils (rinsed)
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes
- 2 cups vegetable broth
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp turmeric
- Small handful chopped walnuts
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
Sauté onion and garlic. Add sweet potato, lentils, tomatoes, broth and spices. Simmer until thick and soft. Top with walnuts for omega-3s and crunch.
A warm, soft meal to calm the nervous system and feels like a weighted blanket for your insides.
Gentle December Rituals
- Choose one to keep your nervous system steady:
- One warm drink before bed
- A phone-free first hour of the morning
- Lighting a candle while you eat in peace
- A five minute legs-up-the-wall pose
- Saying no to one thing and yes to rest
This month is about nourishment, not performance. Make sure you allow yourself the time and space to end the year more rested and thoughtful.
